Description:
Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) is a new suite of climate change solutions that involves physically removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. One promising CDR technique is enhanced rock weathering (ERW). This rapidly expanding climate solution involves spreading common basalt rock on agricultural fields to speed up chemical weathering – a natural process that partially regulates Earth’s climate. If scaled globally, ERW could take up to 5% of human carbon dioxide emissions out of the atmosphere. The organizers of this event have implemented the first 2 “urban ERW” sites in NYC, with one in Greenwich Village and the second on Governors Island.

In this session, we will: 1) give an overview of this process, 2) provide a hands-on demonstration with basalt and soil, and 3) engage attendees in discussion and analysis of ERW via a “Gallery Walk” activity. We will also expand on how “urban ERW” sites in NYC are being used as experimental tools for climate solutions education/outreach.
